জীনগত কারণ ছাড়াও বাংলাদেশে এ্যজমা বা হাঁপানি রোগের প্রকোপ বাড়ছে। বাংলাদেশ এ্যজমা এসোসিয়েশনের তথ্য অনুযায়ী, বর্তমানে দেশে ৮৫ লাখেরও বেশি মানুষ এ্যজমায় আক্রান্ত। তবে শহর ও গ্রাম এই সংখ্যার তেমন কোন পার্থক্য দেখা যায় নি, যার দেখা মিলল জাতীয় পর্যায়ে হাঁপানির উপর করা এক জরীপে। তবে শহরে রয়েছে বায়ু দূষণের মত বড় কারণ এবং গ্রামে পশুপাখির সংস্পর্শে আসার হার বেশি ও কৃষিকাজে কীটনাশক বা অন্যান্য রাসায়নিক পদার্থের ব্যবহার বেশি হওয়ায় এই রোগের প্রকোপ বাড়ছে বলে জানিয়েছেন, সংগঠনটির সহ সভাপতি ড. বিশ্বাস আকতার হোসেন।
তিনি আরও বলেন, জীনগত কারণের সাথে বায়ু দূষণ, এ্যলার্জেন, ঋতু, আবহাওয়া ও তাপমাত্রার পরিবর্তন, কিছু ঔষধ, শ্বাসনালীর সংক্রমণ ইত্যাদি এই রোগের প্রকোপ বাড়িয়ে দিচ্ছে।
তবে এই সমস্যা থেকে বের হয়ে আসা কঠিন হলেও মুখে মাস্ক ব্যবহার করে এ থেকে কিছুটা সহায়তা পাওয়া যাবে বলে জানালেন, ড. বিশ্বাস।
